There are a couple of changes coming up for the resto-shamans in patch 3.0.8 that may end up how I am spec’ed for raiding and heroic 5-mans.
First off, the spec that I am currently running is not exactly the same build that I had posted last week. While I was doing some research I found that Matticus had done a post on the shaman at 80 and his build intriqued me so I gave it a shot with a small tweak. I took a full three points into Ancestral Healing and only 1 point in Nature’s Guaridan.
The build has been holding up well, but I am starting to notice something that I have heard about, but really wanted to see for myself…the weakness of Ancestral Awakening. Currently it only accounts for 2-4% of my healing and like most that have found this, I will be looking for another place for these three talent points. This is where the new patch comes into play for the raiding shaman.
Healing Way doesn’t stack up to 3 times anymore and now increases the effect of subsequent Healing Wave spells on the target by 18%. (Up from 6%)
I will be taking the points out of Ancestral Awakening and putting them into Healing Way. Currently I am a tank healer in a 10 man raid group and I need all the help I can get and the 18% increase in healing on the tank will be a big help. Plus on a side note, I know that I will be able to have this 18% increase all the time and not the % of healing from Ancestral Awakening on a crit.
Improved Water Shield has been changed to – You have a 33/66/100% chance to instantly consume a Water Shield Orb when you gain a critical effect from your Healing Wave or Riptide spells, and a 19.8/39.6/60% chance when you gain a critical effect from your Lesser Healing Wave spell.
As I have gotten some raids and heroic experience under my belt, the watershield global cool down thing has started to wear me down. It was getting to the point where I was getting a blister on my watershield finger. Because of this, I was getting ready to take 1 or 2 points out of this talent but now I think I can let it be. I still might take a point out of it if the global cool down still is an issue but I will need to run with it for a bit to know this for sure.
So there we have it. I guess we will have to wait until this goes live or I get super prepared and roll onto the PTR but I doubt that will happen. Once this goes live I will follow up with how this works and how viable it actually has been.
- Riptide: The initial heal amount has been increased on ranks 3 and 4 and periodic healing has been increased on all ranks.
- Tidal Mastery: Now correctly applies its critical strike bonus to Earth Shield.
- Tidal Waves will now also proc with Riptide.
After a few weeks of giving the new resto talents a good once over in our raids and from some excellent information from our friends over at Elitist Jerks, I have decided to give a new talent build a try.
Currently I am running the ever exciting 61 point resto talent build that can be found here 0/0/61.
Now, based on my personal experience and some interesting mathematical theory based on spell crit and lesser healing wave I have decided upon this build 0/10/51.
Here is the summary of the changes:
Dropped:
Healing Grace – Tanks and DPS are generating so much threat, I barely make a scratch on the agro meter, so for the first time as a Resto Shaman, this talent is going bye bye.
Healing Way – This was the talent that got axed cause I needed three more points =(
Cleanse Spirit/Natures Swiftness (still undecided actually) – One of these will have to go. I like the “Oh shit” button but I also like being able to de-curse. If it comes down to which one I use more, NS will be gone…well at least till I hit 71.
Ancestral Awakening – I have been under whelmed with this talent. It is nice to have that extra heal but I am not really sure how needed it will be. For now I will be dropping it and see how my ability to raid heal is impacted…if at all.
Talents Added:
Ancestral knowledge – The added intelligence is nice and this is the only good tier one enhancement talent for resto shaman.
Thundering Strike – This will add another 5% crit to the healing spells that stacks with the new healing model of crit stacking and lesser healing way with the LHW glyph.
This build is designed to get the most talent based spell crit (14%); this, along with the lesser healing way glyph/earth shield seems to makes the shaman a perfect tank healer with big fast heals without seriously impacting our ability to raid heal.
For the full run down, please go see Elitist Jerks discussion on the WotLK talents for all the math and theory. I plan on reporting my finding in the next week or so after some raid testing.
With the new patch coming sooner than later, it is time to start thinking about the new talent trees and how we will spec our Resto shamans. Do we go for improved water shield with the increased crit component added to shaman healing to aide in mana regeneration or would we take the ancestral spirits to aide us in healing. Honestly I have been over the tree for over and over and still can’t settle on a build that I am truly happy with. Anyone out there have any thoughts?
